History of the Department

Department of chemistry was created in 1939. Previously, the general principles of chemistry were taught at the department of building materials and chemistry, and a bit later – at the department of physics and chemistry at Kharkiv Institute of Engineers public works.

The opening of the chemistry department has been associated with the opening of the specialty "Purification of natural and waste water".

The first head of the department was Ph.D., Associate Professor A.H. Masik. Ph.D., Associate Professor M.E. Postoeva has taken the supervision since 1976 to 1984. Further development of the department was due to administration of Ph.D., Associate Professor М.А. Sobina (1984 – 1990) and Ph.D., Associate Professor L.F. Marakhovskii (1990 – 1998).

In 1991, at the institute, the Faculty of Engineering the Urban Invironment was organized, which included four departments:

  • Engineering the Urban Invironment;
  • Water supply, Wastewater and Water purification;
  • Chemistry;
  • Geodesy and Geo-Information Technologies.

From 1998 to 2009, the head of the Department was Ph.D., Associate Professor Ignatov I.I.

Since 2009 to 2018, the head of the Department was Ph.D., Associate Professor Panayotova T.D.

Since 2018, the head of the Department is Ph.D., Associate Professor Gurina G.I.

Educational process

Teaching of subjects:

  • «Chemistry»
  • «Chemistry with basics of biogeochemistry»
  • «Analytical chemistry»
  • «Physical and chemical analysis of water»
  • «Water chemistry»
  • «Protection from Corrosion»
  • «Electrochemistry and Protection from Corrosion»
  • «Food Chemistry».

The teaching of chemistry at the faculty of study at pre-university training courses for foreign students' at O.M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy is carrying out.

The study process is carried out in laboratories. Students study chemical subjects, gain practical skills in a chemical experiment, take the educational and practical training on analysis of natural waters, which plays an important role in consolidating the obtained skills of the work and in development of chemical and physical and chemical methods of water analysis and interpretation of results.

All chemical subjects which are taught in the Department are supported by the special teaching literature. In order to improve the educational process, the technology of distance learning by 'Moodle' system was implemented.
